Ground School at CCAT

GROUND SCHOOL

Cabair’s ATPL Theoretical Knowledge training syllabus is fully compliant with the Joint Aviation Regulations for Flight Crew Licensing (JAR-FCL) as laid down by the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) and training provided is based on the learning objectives established for each subject by the JAA. Ground School is completed at Cranfield during the first 26 weeks of the programme, Monday to Friday, between 0830 and 1700.

The Ground School classroom accommodation is capable of seating courses of varying numbers of students to a maximum of 24 per course. The facilities are air-conditioned with a crew room for relaxation between teaching sessions. All seven ground school classrooms are equipped with a whiteboard, a data projector and have VCR and PowerPoint hardware available.

Study of the JAA ATP theory syllabus is scheduled over four sessions, as detailed on page 4. This allows the student to fully concentrate on the learning objectives for each individual subject and to acquire the knowledge demanded for licence issue. At the end of each session, the student will complete a period of examination preparation to ensure familiarity with all JAA requirements and procedures. This ground school programme delivers excellent success rates both in terms of first time examination passes and overall average scores. A strong performance in this discipline will greatly enhance the chances of airline recommendation on completion of training.

Theoretical Knowledge Training

The College produces all the required training manuals and support documentation in-house. This allows for a constantly updated bibliography when changes or new material are introduced to the JAR Theoretical Knowledge syllabus. In order to ensure that theory training has been successfully absorbed and retained, Progress Tests are regularly scheduled at key points. Failure to achieve passes in these tests will result in mandatory second attempts before progressing to sit the JAA examinations. Prior to sitting these examinations, revision and practice papers are set to assist the student in examination technique and preparation.

The College benefits from unrestricted use of Cranfield University facilities, including technical library membership, which boasts a comprehensive selection of aviation/aeronautical documentation. The School of Engineering provides several items of interest to the trainee pilot, such as the sectioned gas turbine engines, high and low speed wind tunnels, a B747 research simulator and B737 cabin evacuation trainers.
